Over my past 15 years in online higher education, most related industry research came from the Sloan Consortium (now Online Learning Consortium, or OLC). Many higher education institutions did not offer online courses earlier on and many whose experience was limited to traditional classroom instruction were skeptical of the new format. As a result, OLC surveyed provosts annually to monitor changing perceptions of online education.
Technology and education has been a personal interest for nearly 25 years. As a board member of McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland, I was part of an ad-hoc committee to recruit a technology director in the early 1990s to spearhead the utilization and standardization of personal and faculty computers, classroom projectors, learning management systems, etc.
In early July, I joined Dr. Roy Wood, acting vice president of the Defense Acquisition University (DAU), for a signing ceremony to initiate one of our newest APUS partnerships at their Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, offices. The DAU mission to develop qualified acquisition professionals who deliver and sustain effective and affordable warfighting capabilities fully aligns with our own to educate those who serve, and we’re proud to work with them in this exciting new joint endeavor.
Recent news that the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is offering an MBA in partnership with Coursera is not a surprise. Coursera has worked hard to find a business model that will generate revenues for it and its partner schools, and this opportunity has the potential to create substantially more revenues than the standard MOOC proctoring and certificate fees.The coverage of the partnership by Inside Higher Ed and the Chronicle of Higher Education provides insights to the major terms of the partnership but leaves unanswered questions about student demand for the product, employer acceptance, and accreditation and regulatory compliance among others.
Last week, I attended the University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) and American Council on Education (ACE) Summit for Online Leadership and Strategy in San Antonio. Less than two years ago, I was asked to serve on the UPCEA Center for Online Leadership and Strategy Advisory Council. Part of the Center’s role was to plan the first summit that took place in San Diego last year.

On November 17-20, American Military University (AMU) hosted Together Let’s Stop Traffick, an international summit aimed at promoting collaboration in the ongoing global fight to end human trafficking. Human trafficking is modern-day slavery and has been referred to as the “human rights issue of our era.” Traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to control a person for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex or providing labor services against his or her will.
My three greatest interests in higher education are (in order): affordability, student persistence, and technology-enabled education. Given the size of the sector, researchers or authors usually write about one of those topics in a focused or nuanced paper/book. Having read a reference to the above book that appeared to focus on affordability and technology-enabled education, I ordered a copy.
Dr. Paul Rich is President of the Policy Studies Organization, an academic partner of APUS and publisher of many academic journals. His enthusiasm for affordable learning through technology mirrors mine and I asked him if he would provide an introduction for the conference that we are attending this week at Oxford.

In late April, I was informed that American Public University (APU) planned to present me with one of its James P. Etter Awards for Creativity and Innovation during its recent 2014 Commencement.
